A Chinese Pale Celadon and Russet Jade Brush Washer

18th century
Description

A Chinese Pale Celadon and Russet Jade Brush Washer

Qing Dynasty,

Finely carved from a lustrous pale celadon jade with natural warm russet inclusions, this substantial scholar's brush washer is masterfully worked in high relief and undercut with dynamic mythical motifs.

The oval vessel is elegantly flanked by two powerful, supporting dragons writhing along the exterior with meticulously incised scales, powerful clawed feet, and finely detailed heads peering toward the central well. One side is anchored by a robust, robed figure—traditionally interpreted as an arhat or strongman—steadily supporting or interacting with the celestial creatures amidst swirling currents. The central cylindrical body is subtly delineated beneath the rim with a classical archaistic key-fret band, all resting upon an undulating base carved with dense, rolling ruyi cloud formations.

Dimensions: Width: 9 cm approx

Weight: Approximately 340 grams

Period: Qing Dynasty (18th / 19th Century)

Condition: Exceptional tone and polish, displaying natural amber-russet inclusions and organic veining inherent to the stone.

Provenance: The G S. May Esquire Private Collection, London

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A brush washer is a functional scholars desktop vessel designed to rinse ink from calligraphy and painting brushes during writing or painting sessions. Originating as practical tools, these objects evolved during the Ming and Qing dynasties into status symbols representing literary refinement.

Brush washers were crafted from various high-status materials, with nephrite jade being among the most favoured. Artisans utilised natural boulders of jade, painstakingly carving them by hand using rotary drills and abrasive pastes to form openwork designs, dragons, and figurative motifs.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carving characteristics, including subtle variations in tool marks, deep undercut carving, and smooth hand-polished surfaces rather than uniform machine finishes. The stone itself typically exhibits natural inclusions, varied opacity, and a greasy or waxy surface lustre characteristic of nephrite.

A carved jade brush washer works well displayed as a standalone accent piece on an executive desk, an open bookshelf, or within a glass vitrine. Placing it alongside modern minimal decor or dark wood surfaces highlights its sculptural form and translucency.

Dust the item regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, ultrasonic devices, and sudden temperature shifts, as these can compromise natural fissures or delicate carved details within the stone.
