A crystoleum was a popular decorative art technique during the late Victorian era, involving the application of an albumen photograph onto the back of a convex glass plate. The paper backing was rendered translucent through rubbing and wax treatment, after which oil colours were hand-applied to the reverse side to create a rich, luminous image.

Traditional crystoleums consist of a convex glass pane, an albumen photographic print treated with translucent wax or oils, and backings of paint or secondary glass layers. These pieces are typically encased in heavy wooden frames with gilt or plaster moulding.

Authentic pieces exhibit a characteristic convex glass front with visible depth between the painted highlights and the photographic layer. Inspection of the reverse often reveals secondary glass backing, mounting tape, and age-appropriate oxidisation on the giltwood or plaster frame.

Framed Victorian artwork can be integrated into contemporary spaces by hanging it above modern consoles, incorporating it into a mixed-era gallery wall, or contrasting dark wooden or gilt frames against neutral, minimalist backdrops.
