Description

Sydney Kendrick

British, (1874-1955)

Going for a Walk

Oil on canvas, signed

Image size: 25.75 inches x 19.5 inches

Size including frame: 32.75 inches x 26.5 inches

Provenance: Jack & Boyle, 23 Market Street, Brighton, Sussex

A lovely genre painting of a woman outside a country house with a dog by Sydney Kendrick. A young woman can be seen dressed for a wintry day in a green velvet cloak over a brown dress and holds a fur muffler in her hands. She is shown walking down the snow covered stone steps of a country house followed by a black and tan rough collie.

Sydney Percy Kendrick was born on 17 September, 1874. Little is known about his early life, however he is believed to have studied art in Paris. By the early 1900’s he was living in London where he set up a studio at 3D Warwick Avenue, Maida Vale known as Fulthorpe Studios.

He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1903 and later at the New Society of Artists in Suffolk Street. Kendrick became known for his genre paintings featuring women and also painted portraits of well-known people including the Duke of Devonshire, Marquess of Lansdowne, Dame Sybil Thorndike, Cecil John Rhodes and Lord Curzon of Kedleston. A number of his works also included dogs, as in this fine example. Many of his works were reproduced as illustrations in magazines.

He was a member of the Chelsea Arts Club and the United Society of Artists and also helped organise a number of art shows including an exhibition of pictures by doctors from the Royal Society of Medicine in June 1924. He lived at Warwick Road until around 1939 when he moved to 12 Woodchurch Road in Hampstead. He remained there until his death following a road accident on 27 August, 1955.

Examples of his work are held by the Bishop Stortford Museum, Eton College, Government Art Collection, Oxford Town Hall, The Rhodes Trust, Royal Airforce Museum, Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and University of Oxford.

Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The reverse of the painting bears a label for Jack & Boyle, an art dealership set up in Brighton by Alan Boyle during the early 1960’s. Originally named the Alan Boyle Gallery, the business changed to Jack & Boyle sometime after 1965. By 1969, the gallery had closed.

Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian genre paintings focus on realistic narrative scenes of domestic life, outdoor leisure, and romanticised figures set against detailed architectural or natural landscapes.

Artists typically painted with natural pigment oil paints on stretched linen or cotton canvas, housing the artwork within gesso and timber mouldings coated in gold leaf.

Authentication involves examining artist signatures, analyzing natural craquelure patterns across the paint layer, evaluating period frame joinery, and checking for signs of canvas age and oxidation on the rear.

A gilt-framed oil painting creates striking contrast when mounted against a minimalist wall, hung above a modern console, or layered within an eclectic gallery wall.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, dusting the frame lightly with a soft dry brush while leaving paint restoration to professional conservators.
