Description

A superb Chinese late 19th century carved gilt wood deep relief circular wall plaque.

This very fine piece of Chinese wall art is deeply hand carved. It shows a continuous scene of fighting warriors on horseback, a scholar seated in a temple, and numerous other figures amongst the trees and landscape all of which have been meticulously hand carved with fine three dimensional detail and finished with rich gilding.

The plaque probably originates from the Canton region of China where this type of fine carving was a speciality.

The plaque is in excellent original condition. The gilding shows a lovely age related patina.

On the reverse, the plaque is signed with carved character marks. In addition, there is also an old brass wire for hanging.

Chinese gilt wood carvings historically originated as architectural elements from traditional buildings, temples, and furniture, often depicting narrative scenes from folklore, mythology, or historical battles.

These pieces were typically carved from native softwoods or hardwoods, featuring intricate multi-layered relief work finished with a layer of gold leaf applied over a base ground.

Authenticity is determined by examining the tool marks, the natural ageing and patination of the wood, the wear on the gilt layer, and the traditional joinery or construction methods appropriate to the period.

Such pieces can be mounted on a neutral wall as a focal point of texture and history, or displayed on a custom stand to contrast cleanly against minimalist contemporary surroundings.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight to protect the gold leaf, and dusting gently with a soft, dry brush without using liquid cleaners.
