Description

One of the best 18thc steel ember tongs I have purchased....this fine example is complete with a pleasing shape and pipe tamper...I particularly like the "acorn" knop to the handle and ring turn decoration......it would be hung up by the down-hearth fire...and as you sit in your comfy chair drinking your ale and smoking your pipe,....which would have been lit by using the tongs to get a lighted ember from the fire, after you have "tamped" your tobacco with the tamper included on your tongs.....in excellent original condition.

English. C1770-80.

During the Georgian era, specialised metal tools like ember tongs and pipe tampers were essential daily implements for managing open hearth fires and tobacco pipes, reflecting the domestic technology and craftsmanship of the period.

These items were typically hand-forged from wrought iron or steel by skilled blacksmiths, often featuring articulated joints, spring actions, and decorative elements such as turned knops or integral pipe tampers.

Authenticity is determined by the presence of hand-forged tool marks, period-appropriate patination, traditional construction techniques like pinned box joints, and wear patterns consistent with genuine domestic use.

Antique metalware can be displayed on a mantelpiece, within a disused fireplace hearth, or mounted on a wall as a focal point, adding industrial texture and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Preserve antique steel by keeping it in a dry environment with stable humidity, applying a microcrystalline wax to prevent oxidation, and avoiding abrasive cleaners that could damage the historic surface patina.
