FAQs

A portrait miniature is a small-scale painting, typically executed on materials such as metal, ivory, vellum, or card, highly popular in European art during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Miniatures were commonly painted in oil, watercolour, or enamel on supports like copper panels, thin sheets of metal, ivory, or prepared card, often housed in protective wooden, brass, or papier-mache frames.

Authentication involves examining the paint application under magnification, checking the backing material and frame construction for age-related wear, and looking for period-specific pigments and artist signatures.

Antique miniatures work well when grouped in a gallery wall arrangement, displayed on a small easel on a mantelpiece, or hung in a narrow wall space to add a layer of historic character and intimate detail.

Preservation requires keeping the artwork out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, and avoiding chemical cleaners on both the painted surface and the historic frame.
