We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An anvil is a foundational metalworking tool used since the Bronze Age to forge and shape heated metals. During the Industrial Era, cast iron and forged steel anvils became standardized workspace tools essential for farriers, blacksmiths, and industrial workshops.

Traditional anvils were manufactured from solid cast iron, wrought iron with a steel top plate welded to the face, or entirely forged tool steel. They were typically secured to heavy wooden mounting stumps, usually oak or elm, to absorb shock and reduce noise during hammering.

Authentic period anvils feature signs of hand-forging or heavy casting, visible tool wear on the face, and specific anatomical elements such as a horn, hardy hole, and pritchel hole. Makers marks, weight numbers expressed in hundredweight (cwt) notation, and age-related surface oxidisation further confirm authenticity.

An antique anvil serves as a strong sculptural focal point within industrial, rustic, or modern minimalist interiors. Positioned on its original timber block, it functions as an architectural accent in an entryway, living room hearth, or commercial retail display.

Keep the metal surface free from excess moisture to prevent rust development. Applying a light layer of paste wax or boiled linseed oil protects the iron patina, while the supporting timber block should be treated periodically with wax to prevent drying or splitting.
