FAQs

Nineteenth-century country oak furniture is characterised by robust construction, utilitarian design, and the use of locally sourced British hardwoods. Pieces from this era often feature simpler lines than their urban or metropolitan counterparts, prioritising durability and functional storage.

These chests were typically crafted from solid English oak, often incorporating secondary timbers like pine or elm for drawer linings and backs. Construction relied on traditional joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetails for the drawers and pegged mortise and tenon joints.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetail joints, handmade timber drawer linings showing irregularities, hand-turned wooden knobs, and natural patination and oxidisation accumulated over decades. Tool marks and shrinkage splits in the wood further confirm age.

An antique oak chest acts as a grounding focal point in a modern room, pairing well with minimalist walls and contemporary abstract art. It provides functional storage while adding warmth, texture, and historical contrast to neutral or industrial spaces.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Periodically feed the wood with natural beeswax and buff gently with a soft cloth, avoiding modern silicone-based polishes.
