Period Portraits has dated this piece to the 18th Century.

In the foreground, and between the branches of several tall sinuous trees is a forest clearing, within which is a stepped terrace and a half ruined building where there are the tantalising remains of an illegible signature above the doorway on the left.

Next to this building is a waterfall and in the distance a misty mountainous landscape opens up, with further buildings and a glimpse of a boat upon a river.
This bucolic and calming work has a rich and warm colour palette and has clearly been executed by a most talented hand, it is in an excellent state of conservation and is ready to hang in a later carved and gessoed gilt frame with a wonderful warm antique patina.
