FAQs

Watercolour painting in the 19th and early 20th centuries often focused on romanticised natural landscapes, capturing atmospheric light and rural scenery using layered washes of pigment.

Artists typically used fine-ground pigments suspended in water-soluble binders, applied to heavyweight, rag-based watercolour paper, and secured with traditional wooden frames and protective glass.

Authenticity is assessed through paper fibre analysis, period-appropriate framing techniques, visible artist signatures, and the lack of modern digital printing dot patterns under magnification.

Position the artwork on a neutral wall to draw focus, using period or simple contemporary framing that complements the muted earth tones and traditional subject matter.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, maintain stable indoor humidity levels, and ensure it is framed with acid-free backing boards to prevent yellowing and degradation.
