Description

A fun silhouette of a well-groomed poodle in a garden that is painted in watercolour on laid paper.

The paper has some age browning but acid-free card has now been inserted behind the silhouette to prevent further browning from the original wooden backing board. The date 1824 can just about be made out on the backing paper. A further inscription running round the top possibly gives the pooch’s name but has so far proven to be illegible.

Date of Manufacture

Wigs on the Green has dated this Antique Dog Silhouette Painting to the 19th Century.

FAQs

Silhouette portraiture gained immense popularity during the late 18th and early 19th centuries as an accessible form of likeness before photography became widespread, often depicting family members, pets, and notable figures.

Traditional silhouettes were typically executed using cut black paper, reverse painting on glass, or ink on paper, housed within wooden or papier-mache frames with convex glass.

Authentication relies on examining the substrate material, paper ageing, frame construction techniques such as old backing boards, and the specific handling of ink or pigments consistent with the period.

These pieces work effectively when grouped in a gallery wall arrangement alongside other vintage works, or hung individually on narrow wall spaces to add historic character and focal interest.

Preservation requires keeping the artwork out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the paper and pigments, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on the antique frame.
