In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British equestrian art encompasses portraiture and sporting scenes focused on horses, thoroughbreds, and livestock. Gaining widespread popularity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these works emphasised breed characteristics, physical conformation, and country pursuits.

Most antique equine portraits were created using oil paints applied to stretched flax or linen canvas, or sometimes wooden panels. Frames were typically crafted from solid timbers such as mahogany or oak, often incorporating carved details and gilded slips.

Authentic oil paintings from this era generally show natural age signs, including craquelure across the paint surface, surface patina, and darkening on the reverse of the canvas. Artist signatures, inscriptions detailing the subjects pedigree, and period framing construction also help verify authenticity.

Equestrian portraits work exceptionally well as focal points above fireplace mantels, sideboards, or lined along staircase walls. Pairing traditional framed oil paintings with clean-lined modern furniture creates an engaging contrast between historical character and contemporary design.

Dust the frame and canvas surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or clean badger hair brush. Avoid moisture, chemical cleaners, or direct sunlight, and consult a professional art conservator for deep cleaning or varnish restoration.
