A Wmf Silver Plate Jugendstil Tea and Coffee Set Circa 1906

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful and elegant WMF silver plate tea and coffee set, circa 1906, in the Jugendstil style. The set comprises a tea pot, coffee pot, milk jug, and sugar bowl, and is documented in the 1906 WMF catalogue.

Reflecting the classic characteristics of the Art Nouveau period, the pieces feature a refined beehive form, with raised linear blocks and teardrop medallions. The lid pulls are adorned with a stylised "Tree of Life" motif, while the woven rattan handles offer a pleasing contrast in texture.

It is rare to find a complete set in such excellent condition, with no repairs or soldering. Dimensions given are for the largest pot.

WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik), founded in 1853 by industrialist Daniel Straub in Geislingen, Germany, originally produced metal goods for the railroad industry. In 1880, it expanded into cutlery by acquiring a factory in Heilbronn, starting its production of stainless steel and silver cutlery. WMF grew internationally, establishing branches across Europe and beyond.

The company became renowned for its innovative use of plated silver, developing advanced techniques to create high-quality products. During the Art Nouveau period, WMF gained fame for its artistically designed pieces, featuring flowing lines and elegant shapes, turning everyday kitchenware into functional works of art.

WMF’s iconic "Ostrich Mark" was introduced in 1880, symbolizing the merger of Straub & Schweizer with A. Ritter & Co., and representing the Straub family’s heraldic animal, the ostrich ("Strauss" in German). Other stamps, such as the "OX" and "I/O" marks, denote specific details of the silver plating process.

Today, WMF employs around 6,000 people worldwide, producing a wide range of kitchenware, from pots and pans to knives, coffee makers, and kettles. Known for its quality, innovation, and timeless design, WMF remains a leader in the kitchenware industry.
