FAQs

Metal beds gained popularity during the Victorian era as a hygienic alternative to wooden beds, which were prone to pests. Advances in iron founding allowed for intricate tubular and cast metal designs that became staples in European homes.

These bed frames typically combine malleable iron, cast iron components, and tubular steel. Joints were often secured with brass or iron spigots and collars, while finishes were traditionally applied using hand-painted lead-based paints or early enamelling techniques.

Authentic pieces often show signs of hand-forging, uneven casting textures, and historical layers of paint or oxidation beneath modern finishes. Look for traditional wedge-lock side rail joints rather than modern bolted brackets.

An antique metal bed anchors a bedroom with a sense of historic lightness. Pair the slender frame with crisp neutral linens, textured throws, and contemporary lighting to balance industrial character with modern comfort.

Clean the surface gently using a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth to avoid damaging historic finishes. Inspect structural joints periodically and apply microcrystalline wax to bare metal areas to prevent further oxidation.
