A fine landscape oil on artist board by Edmund John Neimann 1813-1876. The view is typically romantic with a somewhat ruinous cottage on a hill, and a figure walking on the road that runs past it. The composition and technique are superb with great detail in the landscape and a wonderfully cloudy sky. The work is in excellent untouched condition and is signed ‘Niemann’ and dated to the lower right, the date is slightly illegible but probably reads 1849. Edmund John Niemann was born in Islington, London, to a German father in 1813. He worked as a clerk at Lloyd''s Bank as a young man, but from 1839 he devoted himself to art, settling in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Between 1844 and 1872 he exhibited in London, at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. In 1848 he became Secretary of the Free Exhibition (later the Portland Gallery) at Hyde Park Corner. A consummate landscape artist he painted outdoors most often views of the Thames and Swale near ...Richmond, Yorkshire which I believe is what this work shows. Niemann’s later years were plagued by debt and ill health, and his work suffered as a result. He died at about the age of 63 at his home on Brixton Hill, London. This work is framed in the original superb quality gilt frame which is in good untouched condition. The whole is an impressive piece of this highly regard artist’s work.
Overall sizes in inches including frame: 24 ½ by 20 ½
