Fine Japanese Meiji (late 19thC) bronze okimono of Kinjiro Ninomiya by Hideyama. Typically depicted as a boy carrying a bundle of sticks and walking while absorbed in his reading, the book he holds incised with a passage from the Daikoku (Great Learning), one of the Four Books of Confucianism. Raised on a circular base and signed Shuzan/Hideyama at the rear. 31cm x 16cm x 12cm, 3.6kg.
Ninoyama Sontoku (1787-1856), also known as Ninoyama Kinjiro, was a famous agriculturalist, philosopher and economist. Statues depicting him as a boy studying are often seen near Japanese schools.
Superb condition and patina.
