Herbert Royle (1870-1958) was a British landscape painter, born in Patricroft, Lancashire. He trained at the Harris Institute in Preston and Southport school of art under John William Buxton Knight. He exhibited extensively at the Walker gallery, Liverpool, Manchester city art gallery, Royal Academy and at other Galleries and Exhibitions throughout the Country. From 1924 onwards he lived at the Manor House in the hamlet of Nesfield, near Ilkley, where he also had a studio on the hillside above the house. Some of his finest work was painted in this area around his home in Wharfedale.
''Bluebells above the Wharfe'' is an oil painting on canvas measuring 24'' x 20''. It is signed lower left and is framed in a good period gilt frame giving an overall size of 35''x 30''. A lovely example of his work, showing one of the artist''s most popular subjects.
