Poetic Pierrot, The Melancholy Clown, Ca 1930 Art Deco Period Original French Line Drawing On Paper

Pierrot is a fascinating figure: originally a stock figure of the 17th Century commedia dell''Arte, his character developed from being a buffoon to an avatar of the disenfranchised. Many cultural movements found him amenable to their respective causes: Decadents turned him into a disillusioned foe of idealism; Symbolists saw him as a lonely fellow-sufferer; Modernists made him into a silent, alienated observer of the mysteries of the human condition. ''I''m Pierrot,'' said David Bowie: ''I''m Everyman''.

Our very poetic and beautiful Pierrot is a work by French artist Emile Bouneau (1911-1970). Pierrot seems to be sitting on the deck of a boat, perhaps sailing away from his lost love.

Having studied initially at the École des beaux-arts d''Avignon, Bouneau attended, from 1919 to 1925, the courses at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris. This was followed by a stay in San Francisco in 1928.

Bouneau was awarded the Abd-el-Tif prize in 1933, which earned him a two-year stay at the Abd-el-Tif villa in Algiers. It was there that he became friends with Albert Camus, who cited him as one of the remarkable painters of his time.

Emile Bouneau volunteered for the Republican faction durning the Spanish Civil War!

Signed at the upper right, our art deco period line drawing in China ink of Pierrot measures 29 x 23 cm at sight. The overall dimensions in a natural oak frame are 47 x 41 cm.
