FAQs

A Victorian portrait painting is a work of art created during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), typically depicting individuals in realistic detail using oil paints on canvas.

These artworks were predominantly painted using oil-based pigments on stretched linen canvas, housed within heavily carved and gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is identified through canvas ageing, craquelure in the oil paint layer, period-appropriate stretcher frames, and the construction techniques of the gilt frame.

An antique portrait adds gravity and historical depth to modern spaces when paired with minimalist surroundings or utilised as a focal point within a gallery wall.

Preservation requires keeping the artwork out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and cleaning the surface gently with professional conservation techniques.
