Seventeenth Century Oil Painting of Saint Anthony of Padua

A fine and early oil on canvas laid to board, depicting Saint Anthony of Padua with the Christ child. The work typically represents Saint Anthony cradling the infant Jesus and is beautifully painted with great skill. The piece is in good untouched condition with some minor losses that have simply faded into the background over time. There is no signature to the piece though this is not unusual for this period, I suspect it would have been painted in southern Italy. The canvas was laid to a board probably in the nineteenth century when it would have been framed in this wonderful gilt frame. The frame has all original gilding and is in great untouched condition. The whole has a superb early look and is a fine example of this genre of work. C.1700.
