A Stunning Quality George III Period Mahogany Serpentine Fronted Commode, Or Side Cabinet, Having Superbly Figured Top Over Three Central Mahogany Lined Drawers Retaining Their Original Gilt Brass Oval Handles, Flanked By Curved Cupboard Doors Enclosing Shelves And Panelled Ends, Raised On Original Square Tapering Legs.
The term commode can be somewhat confusing with regards to antique furniture as it is generally interchangeable for two totally different forms of items. The orginal use of the word commode was for items such as this beautiful piece, lower than they are high, designed to stand against a wall with perhaps extravagant candelabra or similar on top and generally to look rather splendid. The term originated from France but was widely used in England as well to describe any type of chest of drawers or side cabinet which is lower than it is wide.
This example is quite simply exceptional both in terms of its overall elegance and design and also its quality of construction and condition. Clearly constructed in one the very best English workshops of the late 18th century, quite possibly the workshops of Gillows of Lancaster in fact based on the design of the wonderful original gillt brass handles, it exudes elegance, sophistication and class. Another sign of real quality is the mahogany lined drawers to the centre.
As mentioned previously it is in extremely good condition with just a few old veneer repairs which are to be expected with age and it retains its original handles as well as its original feet.
These pieces are rarely found, especially in such good condition and it would be perfect for an absolute host of spaces around the home, really adding something in terms of both function and form to any room in which it is placed.
As with items which we offer for sale this Georgian Commode has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it
...is in absolutely the best possible condition possible before being placed on sale.
