A Medieval Gothic Wood Carved Sculpture Of A Smiling Young Saint Bishop

£2,700    $3,700    €3,101
This 15th century bishop - sculpted ca AD1460 - has a smile on his lips and a benevolent presence. He is also something of an Adonis - one tends to forget that in the medieval church, even members of the high clergy were often only in their 20s or 30s.

Originating from the North of France, he is carved from oak in full round, he is standing full figure, wearing a mitra and a mantle with beautiful drapery. While his forearms are absent, he seems to be addressing the viewer with a gesture of blessing. Elements of polychromy are remaining.
