FAQs

Nineteenth-century watercolour painting is characterised by transparent washes, loose brushwork, and a focus on plein-air landscape and architectural subjects, often created during travels.

These artworks were traditionally created using ground pigments mixed with a water-soluble binder, applied to handmade rag paper or thick watercolour board derived from cotton or linen fibres.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit age-related tonal shifts in the paper, watermark lines visible under transmitted light, and mineral-based pigments that lack the uniform vibrancy of modern synthetic alternatives.

An antique watercolour is best framed with conservation-grade UV-protective glass and neutral acid-free mounts, allowing it to serve as a focal point on a gallery wall or a quiet study partition.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, antique watercolours must be displayed away from direct sunlight and high humidity, ideally maintained in climate-controlled indoor environments.
