FAQs

Early 20th century British watercolours typically focus on pastoral scenes, atmospheric weather effects, and realistic depictions of rural life, reflecting the continuing influence of the traditional watercolour school combined with impressionistic light studies.

These works were typically created using fine gum arabic-based pigments applied to heavyweight cotton or rag watercolour paper, often mounted on card and housed behind protective glass.

Authentication involves examining the artist signature for consistency with known exemplars, inspecting the paper stock for appropriate age characteristics and watermarks, and checking the framing materials and backings for period-correct components.

An antique landscape painting works well when framed with a neutral mount to bridge historic art with modern walls, serving as a focal point in living rooms, studies, or hallways.

Antique watercolours should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent paper foxing, fading of pigments, and deterioration of the underlying paper fibres.
