Portrait of a Young Lady - Antique Oil Painting

19th century
Description

Oil on panel a young lady wearing a green jacket. The painting has an indistinct signature and details on the rear, including a gallery ticket stating the artist as Egg. It is mounted in an attractive pierced gilt frame. The painting is attributed to Augustus Leopold Egg (British, 1816-1863).

Augustus Leopold Egg RA was a British Victorian artist, and member of The Clique best known for his modern triptych Past and Present (1858), which depicts the breakup of a middle-class Victorian family.

Egg's early paintings were generally illustrations of literary subjects. Like other members of The Clique, he saw himself as a follower of Hogarth. His interest in Hogarthian moral themes is evidenced in his paired paintings 'The Life and Death of Buckingham', which depicted the dissolute life and sordid death of the Restoration rake George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham. Yet his paintings often took a humorous look at their subjects, as in his Queen Elizabeth Discovers she is no longer Young (1848).

This nineteenth-century oil painting on panel depicts a young lady wearing a green jacket and a brown head covering, seated against a muted landscape backdrop with chiaroscuro lighting and drapery detailing. The artwork features an indistinct signature, details on the rear including a gallery ticket stating the artist as Egg, and is mounted in a pierced gilt frame, displaying signs of age with surface craquelure and worn paintwork. Measuring 36 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the piece suits traditional English Country House interiors and makes a striking display placed above the mantel in a living room, hallway, or study. The artwork carries attribution to Augustus Leopold Egg, a Victorian British artist and member of The Clique, who is best known for his modern narrative and literary scenes. The composition employs dramatic lighting to highlight the subject's features and her traditional attire against the dark, moody background. Collectors of nineteenth-century British portraiture will appreciate the historical context and the distinctive aesthetic of the period.

Portraiture of the 19th century often emphasised subtle realism, soft chiaroscuro lighting, and naturalistic settings, capturing the character and dress of the sitter.

Artists typically used hand-ground oil pigments on stretched linen canvas or wooden panels, primed with gesso and sealed with natural tree resin varnishes.

Authentic period oil paintings exhibit age-appropriate craquelure patterns, natural discolouration of varnish, historical stretcher bar construction, and signs of hand-prepared surfaces.

An antique oil portrait can be hung individually above a mantelpiece or console, or combined with contemporary art in a curated gallery wall to create visual contrast.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity. Dust the surface very gently with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional conservator for heavy cleaning.
