The 19th century is widely considered the golden age of British watercolour painting, characterised by a shift towards plein-air observation, atmospheric depiction of light, and detailed architectural and landscape studies.

Traditional watercolours utilised finely ground pigments mixed with gum arabic, applied to heavy rag paper made from cotton or linen fibres, often housed behind glass within wooden frames.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate paper watermarks, handwritten artist signatures, subtle tonal grading achieved through washes rather than modern synthetic pigments, and historical framing materials on the reverse.

An antique watercolour brings historic depth to a room and is best displayed on neutral walls away from direct sunlight, utilizing acid-free mounts and traditional timber frames to complement its heritage aesthetic.

To prevent fading and degradation, antique watercolours must be kept out of direct sunlight and high humidity, ideally framed with UV-protective glass and acid-free backing boards.
