Hottes or Hods were used during the 19th and early 20th centuries for collecting harvested grapes at French vineyards. The vineyard employee would attach the Hotte to his/her back (via the leather straps seen in the photos) and place the harvested grapes directly into the container.

This French Grape Hod from the Medoc Region II the South of France circa 1920-40 and has a later painted derivation of the Grand-Puy Ducasse vineyard label on the original unpainted surface. Black lettering with gold embellishment has been painted above and below the label: “Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse” and “Pauillac” respectively with the crest between.

The stylized label consists of two golden lion supporters flanking a cream coat of arms shield charged with three black crosses adorned with roundel tips and arrow-like tails.

Additionally, a five point bejewelled open crown in gold tops the shield, while a gold banner reading Ægis Semper Amici (“friends forever”) can be seen beneath.
