FAQs

Portrait miniatures originated from illuminated manuscripts and limning during the sixteenth century, evolving into highly detailed personal mementoes and portable artworks favoured by nobility and the middle classes.

Artists traditionally painted miniatures on vellum, ivory, card, or copper plates using watercolour, gouache, or oil paints, housed within protective cases or wooden frames with brass or gilt bezels.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of brushwork, pigment analysis, substrate material, frame construction, and any artist signatures or period labels on the reverse.

These small artworks suit gallery walls alongside other framed curiosities or placed on narrow wall spaces to introduce historic character and intimate scale to a room.

Miniatures require protection from direct sunlight to prevent fading of pigments, and stable humidity levels to avoid warping or mould growth on delicate substrates.
