Japanese Meiji (19thC) bronze kirin incense burner by Living National Treasure artist Masahiko Katori. Measures 18cm x 7.5cm x 20cm high, weight 1.25kg.

Excellent condition and patina.

Kirin (or qilin, girin, ghilen, kylan or others, depending on the translation and language of origin), also called "Eastern unicorns, are a type of mythological creature found in Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese folklore. Japanese art tends to depict the kirin as more deer-like than in Chinese art. Alternatively, it is depicted as a dragon shaped like a deer, but with an ox's tail instead of a lion's tail. In Japan, the Kirin is considered as the most powerful and divine, and is usually placed above all other mythological creatures.
