In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This 18th century Georgian country oak cottage dresser exhibits a warm brown timber colour with a visible grain, a shelved top with two plate rails, and a scalloped cornice fitted with blacksmith-made hooks. Beneath the upper shelves sit a row of small spice drawers, positioned above a counter containing a selection of larger drawers with round turned wooden knobs. The base includes an open pot shelf set behind decorative arched aprons, supported by turned vertical columns and low feet. The construction shows an authentic antique patina across all visible wooden surfaces. Standing at 193 cm high, 145 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this substantial piece serves as both storage and display furniture. In a modern home, it functions well in a country kitchen or dining room for holding crockery, glassware, and tableware on the open shelving and within the numerous drawer compartments.

FAQs

Georgian country oak dressers typically feature a solid timber build combining a lower storage base with an elevated open plate rack. Common regional variations include open pot shelves at the bottom, multiple drawer configurations with turned wooden knobs or brass handles, and decorative arched or scalloped aprons.

These pieces were primarily constructed from solid English oak, often showcasing peg joinery, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, and hand-sawn backboards. Native hardwoods like fruitwood or elm were occasionally incorporated for drawer linings or accent details.

Authenticity is indicated by irregular hand-cut dovetails, uneven backboards showing pit-saw marks, and natural shrinkage across wide timber panels. Genuine period examples usually display an aged surface patina with subtle wear patterns around handles, drawer runners, and lower shelves.

In modern interiors, open plate racks serve as display areas for modern ceramics, glassware, or curated books. Positioned in a dining space, hallway, or kitchen, the warm timber tones contrast balanced neutral wall surfaces and contemporary lighting.

Routine care involves dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood. Protect the surface from direct sunlight, extreme humidity fluctuations, and liquid spills to preserve the historical finish.
