Nineteenth-century portraiture often captured realistic likenesses with dramatic use of light and shadow, shifting from neoclassical formality towards romanticism and realism as the century progressed.

These works were typically executed using oil paints applied to stretched woven canvas, often housed within heavily carved, gessoed, and gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining canvas weave, ageing patterns in the paint and varnish under ultraviolet light, stretcher bar construction, and historical framing techniques.

An antique portrait creates a strong focal point when hung against neutral or boldly painted walls, blending traditional historical depth with modern minimalist or eclectic furnishings.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and keeping the canvas away from extreme heat sources.
