The Victorian art period spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, encompassing various stylistic movements including romanticism, realism, and academic painting, often focusing on narrative scenes, portraits, and landscapes.

Traditional works from this era typically utilized linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden frames, painted with ground pigments suspended in linseed or walnut oil, and housed in hand-carved, gessoed, and gilded wooden frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, inspecting the composition and pigment characteristics under magnification, checking for craquelure consistent with age, and reviewing the stretcher bars and framing techniques.

An antique oil painting can be paired with modern minimalist furnishings to create a striking contrast, serving as a focal point above a mantelpiece or on a neutral wall to add historical depth and texture.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and keeping the surface free of dust using a soft, dry brush without applying liquid cleaners.
