We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian serpentine kneehole chest is a mid-18th-century piece of dual-purpose furniture featuring a wavy, S-curved front profile and a recessed central opening. Originally designed for bedrooms and dressing rooms, these pieces functioned both as compact writing desks and dressing tables.

These chests were typically crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak or pine carcass wood. High-grade pieces feature cuts of flame mahogany veneer on the drawer fronts, hand-cast brass swan-neck handles, and steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak drawer linings with grain running from front to back, and hand-planed timber surfaces. Original brass hardware will show subtle irregularities, and the timber patination should display natural wear around handles and feet.

A kneehole chest can be placed in a modern study, hallway, or bedroom to serve as a compact desk or console. Pairing dark mahogany with neutral wall tones, contemporary task lighting, or modern artwork creates a balanced contrast between period and contemporary design.

Maintain mahogany timber by wiping surfaces with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing gently to preserve the patina, and keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight.
