William IV Bronze Gallon Measure Dated 1834

19th century
Description

A good William IV period cast bronze IMPERIAL GALLON MEASURE, engraved "County of Lancaster" and dated 1834, with twin bronze carrying handles and various Customs & Excise ‘proof’ marks including those for WIVR; VR; GVR and ER plus other dated stamps. 12ins wide (across the handles); 7ins high; 8ins diameter. (30.5 x 17.5 x 20cms)

** These measures (they range from the Bushel ~ the largest ~ down to a Half-Gill) were used by Customs & Excise to check that market traders were not under-selling their customers. The penalties for doing so were usually a heavy fine, or for persistent offenders, banishment to a penal colony in Australia!
