A Huge Edwardian Lead Planter

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Tigers Decorative

A huge Edwardian lead planter in the French Renaissance style, made with eight repeating panels. The lead casting is deep, crisp and well defined. The imagery is exceptional with the satyrs facing in opposite directions with a mask in between them and from their mouths flow strapwork in flat relief and interlaced scroll work. The satyrs hold flowers in one hand and fruit in the other, teasing the monkeys. In the centre of each panel the strapwork surrounds a rose.

Satyrs represented symbols of fertility and danger, part man, part beast. Monkeys were used in allegories by various artists from the middle ages to the 20th Century, they symbolise mischievousness, wisdom and human folly.
