Portrait miniatures are small, highly detailed paintings on ivory, vellum, or card that originated in the 16th century and reached peak popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras as personal tokens of affection.

These works were typically painted in watercolour or gouache on thin slices of ivory, card, or vellum, and protected by convex glass set within gold, brass, or pinchbeck frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the fineness of the stipple or hatch brushwork under magnification, the natural ageing of the support material, the hand-forged characteristics of the metal frame, and period-appropriate clothing and hair styles.

These delicate pieces can be displayed within a gallery wall of mixed antique framed art, placed on a dedicated display stand within a cabinet, or hung individually on a narrow wall space using traditional brass wire.

Preservation requires keeping the miniature away from direct sunlight to prevent the fading of delicate watercolours, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and avoiding harsh cleaning agents on the historic metal frame.
