Eighteenth-century French gilt bronze, often known as ormolu, is characterised by mercury gilding applied to cast bronze, creating a brilliant, durable finish that highlights classical proportions and dynamic movement.

These pieces were typically produced using the lost-wax casting method (cire perdue) with a copper alloy, followed by hand-chasing to refine details and the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury for the gilt surface.

Authentic pieces exhibit crisp hand-chased surface details, natural wear to the high points revealing the warm bronze underneath, and heavy, high-density casting marks consistent with eighteenth-century foundry practices.

Position the piece on a clean-lined surface such as a dark timber mantelpiece, side table, or open bookshelf to let the metallic texture contrast against contemporary textures and neutral backdrops.

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid all chemical cleaners, polishes, or abrasive materials, which can permanently strip or damage the historic mercury gilt surface.
