FAQs

Continental oil paintings from this era typically feature romanticised pastoral scenes, landscapes, or genre subjects created by European artists working outside of Britain, often characterised by rich colour palettes and detailed brushwork.

These works were traditionally executed with oil-based pigments applied to stretched woven canvas, housed within hand-carved and gilded wooden frames finished with gesso and composition ornamentation.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the weave and age of the canvas, oxidisation of the oil paints, craquelure patterns, stretcher frame construction, and the craftsmanship of the accompanying period frame.

An antique painting adds historical depth and character when hung as a focal point against neutral walls, or incorporated into a curated salon-style gallery wall alongside modern and vintage pieces.

Preservation requires displaying the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity, avoiding chemical cleaners on the canvas or frame, and occasionally consulting a professional conservator for surface cleaning.
