Antique Early Metalware 17thc Bronze "Endless Knot" Mortar. English C1660-80.

17th century
Description

A fine bronze mortar from the 17thc cast twice with an endless knot motif, probably emblematic of 'eternity'....this mortar has been traced to an unidentified London foundry....it is in very good condition and shows it has had a working life, with some light nibbles along the top rim of the mortar, something which does not detract as even these have patinated over with time.....the crackles shown on the picture of the underneath are not cracks...just surface wear and tear....again showing it has had a long life giving good service in the 17thc apothecary or manor house kitchen.

English. C1660-80.-

Reference: See page 82 - illustration 142 for a similar example in Michael Finlay's definitive book on English Decorated Bronze Mortars.
