A Pair of Early 19th Century Tin Glazed Polychrome Jugs.

Each with a tapered finial, over the circular covers. The covers painted with curling flowers. The pair of jugs of elongated baluster shape, with small spouts, and rounded handles. The whole decorated with rising and opening flowers, before the circular foot, with yellow banding as per the rims.

Date circa 1820.

FAQs

Tin-glazed earthenware, often referred to as faience, maiolica, or delftware, is pottery coated with a lead glaze containing tin oxide. This produces an opaque white background suitable for hand-painted polychrome decoration prior to firing.

Pieces were wheel-thrown or moulded from earthenware clay, fired once to create a biscuit body, dipped into a liquid tin-oxide glaze, and then hand-painted with mineral oxides before undergoing a second kiln firing.

Authentic period pieces often feature small firing imperfections, surface crazing, slight chips revealing the reddish or buff clay body beneath, hand-painted line variation, and visible pinholes or stilt marks from the kiln.

These decorative ceramic jugs can be arranged as a pair on a sideboard, styled within a open kitchen dresser, or used as a focal point on a mantelpiece to add colour and historic texture to a room.
