Watercolour Painting by Charles James Adams - Droving Sheep Across Moorland (British 1859 - 1939)

19th century
Description

Here is a wonderfully atmospheric watercolour painting by the notable English artist Charles James Adams, of a Shepherd droving his sheep across the moors. Broom and Gorse cover the hillside, and the horizon melts into a purple haze under a big sky with white billowing clouds.

A highly accomplished artist, Adams was born in Gravesend in Kent in 1851, and went on to study at the Leicester School of Art.

He has exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, The Royal Hibernian Academy, The Royal Society of Oil Painters, The Royal Society of British Artists, The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists as well as having works exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Manchester City Art Gallery.

The watercolour is signed to the bottom left, and presented mounted and framed behind glass measuring 54cm by 41cm, the image itself 34cm by 21cm.

Adams artwork is highly collectable, and has been sold by the UK's most prestigious auction houses.

The painting is in good condition with the colours as bright and vibrant as the day they were painted - there is some light foxing to the sky area, so please have a look at this in the photographs.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further information or photographs.

I offer free delivery throughout the UK, and am very happy to help with quotes for shipping abroad.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This period was characterised by a focus on rural light, natural weather conditions, and traditional pastoral activities such as farming and droving. Artists employed delicate washes and fine detail to capture the British countryside.

Artists used water-soluble pigments applied to heavy cotton rag paper. Works were usually protected behind glass with cotton-board mounts and framed in gilded or timber moulding.

Look for signature details, hand-applied pigment layer transparency, age-appropriate toning or foxing on paper, and period framing techniques such as original board backings.

Pastoral art provides visual warmth when styled above modern sideboards or consoles, creating textural balance against minimalist architecture or neutral colour schemes.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent fading or paper warping. Use UV-protective glass and conservation-grade mounting materials during framing.
