He had four older half brothers who were also artists; Samuel James, Albert, Charles Lawrence and Octavius Thomas Clark. As a teenager he collaborated with his father on some works signing them as James Clark and Son. Like his father he specialised in portraits of race horses, prize winning livestock and dogs and supplemented his income by working as a conservator for a local auctioneer.
