FAQs

Nineteenth-century folk art portraits are characterised by a non-academic, naive perspective, often created by itinerant artists or gifted amateurs using watercolours or oils on paper or canvas.

These pieces typically utilised hand-mixed watercolour pigments on rag paper or card stock, housed in simple timber frames such as maple, pine, or mahogany with hand-planed mouldings.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the paper stock watermark, the oxidation of pigments, the age-appropriate fasteners in the frame, and the characteristic handling of the medium typical of the mid-Victorian era.

Antique portraits add historical depth and narrative to contemporary spaces and are traditionally hung on neutral walls or incorporated into curated gallery displays to create visual interest.

Preservation requires framing with acid-free materials, UV-filtering glass to prevent pigment fading, and placement away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations.
