Landscape painting evolved from being a background element in historical or religious scenes to an independent genre during the Renaissance, gaining widespread popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries as artists turned to en plein air techniques to capture natural light and atmosphere.

Traditional oil paintings typically utilise finely woven linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden stretcher frames, painted with ground pigment particles suspended in drying oils such as linseed, walnut, or poppyseed.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, craquelure patterns in the paint layer, stretcher frame construction, artist signatures, and any historical framing or labels on the reverse.

An antique oil painting adds depth and character to contemporary spaces when paired with minimalist frames to create contrast, or displayed on neutral walls with dedicated picture lighting to draw focus.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and periodically dusting the surface with a soft, dry brush.
