Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
Offending traders (under-selling product) were scorned by the public and taken to court. Repeat offenders were placed in the stocks for public humiliation and in extreme cases even deported to Australia and the USA.
This measure is an Imperial Gallon measure and numbered 620 with integral solid bronze handles. It would have been used mostly for the measurement of agricultural products such as wheat. Eight imperial gallons equals a Bushel. In current times these measures are used mostly for display purposes, containers for dried flower arrangements of interestingly, as they are water-tight' wine buckets/coolers!
Dimensions: It measures 12 inches (30.5 cm) across at the widest point (including handles) and 7 inches (18 cm) tall.
Dated: It bears excise marks for the years 1832 through to 1912, when shortly after it would have been taken out of service. The date 1835 is inscribed on the side and most likely the date it was adopted by the County of Lancaster
