Martha Fowler, Sea Fog on the Cornish Coast - Antique Watercolour

19th century
Description

This late 19th-century watercolour by British artist Martha Fowler (b.1843) depicts a view on the Cornish coast.

Fisherfolk carry nets amid a haze of dense fog. Meandering between pools of water left by the retreating tide. Beyond, the craggy stone cliffs are nearly imperceptible, their imposing presence quietly receding. Perhaps it’s morning, an early start for these local Cornish workers.

Martha Fowler treasured the coast. Hailing from Southampton, she spent seven decades in her home town before moving to picturesque Shaftesbury in Dorset. Here we see her aptitude for gentle variations of tone. Mastering fog is a challenging endeavour.

Signed, framed, glazed and inscribed.

Medium: Watercolour

Overall size: 31” x 25” / 79cm x 63cm

Year of creation: c. 1890

Provenance: Herefordshire, England.

Condition: Artwork presents well. Frame with some light wear.

British artist Martha Fowler (b.1843) was a British painter of landscapes and interior scenes working predominantly in watercolours. She lived in Southampton for around 70 years before moving to Shaftesbury, Dorset. Her works were shown at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.
