A fine quality small-sized bronze ‘animalier’ Bronze Bull, signed to the base by famous French modeller Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899). Detail is crisp and sharp, with good colour and patina.

Rosa (born Marie-Rosalie) Bonheur (1822-1899) was a French artist known best as a painter of animals (animalièr). She also made sculptures in a realistic style. Bonheur was widely considered to be the most famous female painter of the 19th century. Although she was more popular in England than her native France, she was decorated with the French Legion of Honour and later promoted to Officer of the order in 1894. The first female artist to be given this award.
