Wedgwood Creamware Variegated Lustre Jug C1810

Description

This fabulous WEDGWOOD CREAMWARE JUG is decorated in VARIEGATED LUSTRE, sometimes called MOONLIGHT LUSTRE. It dates from circa 1810.

The colours, achieved by “a solution of gold with a little tin mixed with Sweet Wort and laid on with a feather”, are amazing and set off by gilt banding.

The JUG bears the impressed Wedgwood mark to the base.

The condition is good. There is a small, thin surface chip to the underside of the lip and two small star cracks to the main body. There is no restoration.

Height: 6.5 inches (16.5 cm)

Creamware is a light-coloured earthenware developed in eighteenth-century Staffordshire, known for its pale lead glaze. Variegated lustreware applies metallic oxides over mottled or marbleised glazes to achieve a reflective, iridescent surface effect.
