Sold 15 August 2025 · Jane Short Antiques

Description

An 18th Century oil on canvas of the "Madonna of the Magnificat". The Madonna bows her head in prayer and there is a crown upon her head.

We found the painting unframed and in need of attention so we had it lightly and sympathetically cleaned and the canvas re-lined. We resisted having it newly framed and waited until we were able to find an old frame which would enhance the image, which is now in place. That frame is 19th Century, made of rosewood and in very good condition.

We can deliver free of charge in UK mainland and can calculate the cost for international delivery. Payment by bank transfer, PayPal of card via telephone

Date of Manufacture

Jane Short Antiques has dated this 18th Century Religious Painting to the 18th Century.

Eighteenth-century religious paintings often reflect baroque and neoclassical influences, characterised by dramatic use of light and shadow, emotional depth, and devotion to traditional iconography.

These works typically utilise hand-woven linen canvas stretched over wooden frames, painted with oil-based pigments, and housed in hand-carved or veneered wooden frames.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of canvas weave, craquelure patterns in the oil paint, stretcher frame construction, and pigments consistent with historical periods.

Incorporating historical paintings into contemporary spaces creates a striking focal point, often paired with minimalist surroundings to emphasise the texture and depth of the artwork.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and consulting professional conservators for cleaning or canvas tension adjustments.
