Early C19th Italian bronze ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir reduction , after the antique, of “The Borghese Vase”.

Well-cast bronze reduction of the ancient marble campana-shaped vase known as “The Borghese Vase” .

The original vase is a monumental bell-shaped krater sculpted in Athens from Pentelic marble in the second half of the 1st Century BC as a garden ornament for the Roman market. It was acquired in 1566 by the Borghese family, subsequently bought by Napoleon in 1808 , it is now exhibited in the Louvre Museum , Paris .

The frieze depicts an ecstatic Bacchanalian procession, featuring Dionysus, God of wine , and Ariadne.

The body of the vase in excellent original condition with a rich original colour and patina. The inner zinc liner having minor areas of wear and corrosion, having probably previously utilised as a flower or plant holder.
